Aaron Rai displayed remarkable nerve to secure the prestigious Abu Dhabi title on the final day, beating Tommy Fleetwood in a dramatic playoff following a rollercoaster last day of play.
The Englishman sank a crucial birdie from around eight foot to seal the win, repeating his only previous Rolex Series triumph at the 2020 Scottish Open, which was likewise a play-off victory over the same opponent.
The champion started the last day with a single stroke advantage over fellow Englishman Tommy Fleetwood and Denmark’s Højgaard. He ended up with a overall score of 263 after a topsy-turvy, five-under final round that featured seven birdie putts and two bogeys.
Fleetwood edged one shot clear with two holes remaining after a birdie putt on the sixteenth, but his rival pulled level again on the 17th and then failed to convert a 10-foot birdie putt to claim victory on the last hole.
That set up a playoff at the Yas Links course where Rai prevailed to take the title and $1.5m (£1.13 million) in prize money.
{“Tommy is a world-class player and an even more person. To compete alongside him the last two days was truly memorable,” said the winner, the present world No 30. “You’re so focused on playing the round and staying in the zone, it’s difficult to put into words at the moment how it feels. It is incredible to be holding the trophy.”
The Northern Irish star left himself just too much to do, coming up one shot short in a shared third place with the Dane, after a stunning 10-under final round of ten-under. It was his best-ever score on the European Tour, comprising eight birdies and an eagle.
The Danish golfer carded six birdies of his own, but his hopes of topping the standings were hit by a bogey on the twelfth. England’s Mansell produced an superb final-round 63 to finish tied for fifth with Australian Hillier.
