Bittersweet Feelings: Palestinians Welcome Ceasefire Deal While Confronting Profound Loss

Gaza residents experiencing truce agreement

People in Gaza have demonstrated happiness over the recently announced ceasefire and hostage release agreement - though several dread confronting the collected pain that has grown during two years of conflict.

"Earlier today, when we received information regarding the truce, it generated dual elation and grief," shared a 38-year-old mother, who lost her 16-year-old child amid the fighting.

"From happiness, both the young and the old started cheering," she continued. "And those who had seen relatives perish commemorated their memory and wondering how we would come back to our houses in their absence."

Terms of the Arrangement

The recently announced peace agreement - which still requires approval from Israel's war cabinet - will see the release of 20 detained persons and the remains of 28 deceased captives in exchange for 250 incarcerated individuals facing lifetime imprisonment in Israeli jails and 1,700 imprisoned persons from Gaza.

This constitutes the initial stage of a 20-point peace plan that could possibly result in an end to the war - however remaining steps still need to be negotiated.

Civilian Experiences

"We, the civilians, are the ones who've suffered - truly suffered hardship," explained Daniel Abu Tabeekh, from the Jabalia displacement center.

"The factions fail to comprehend our hardship. These officials living securely in foreign countries have minimal awareness about the hardship we're facing throughout the territory."

"I lack housing," he added. "I have survived without shelter for 547 days."

War Context

Warfare initiatives began in Gaza in response to the Hamas attacks on October 7th, 2023, when nearly 1,200 persons, mainly non-combatant citizens, were slain and 251 others captured.

The resulting combat operations have resulted in the deaths of more than 67,000 Palestinians, most of whom are civilians, according to the territory's health ministry.

Ruin and Optimism

The vast majority of Gaza's housing has been damaged or destroyed, according to worldwide agencies.

"God rewarded us for our perseverance," explained Umm Nader Kloub from the Gaza north, who lost seven relatives amid the hostilities, comprising her male offspring.

"Hopefully, he will help [the negotiators] and allow us all to return to our houses, and for the captive individuals to be released securely," she continued. "We reject conflict."

Healthcare Viewpoint

A doctor named Mousa, a doctor in the territory's center, commented: "We have sacrificed a lot during the two years of war. The region is devastated. A challenging period lies in our future, but the crucial aspect is we hope to be safe."

Mental Health Effects

As information about a potential truce emerged during the weekend, a political official stated: "The most difficult aspect in the last two years, is that as you're experiencing the loss of loved ones, your relatives, your friends, your local residents, you are not able to give yourself permission to grieve, or to feel the deep sadness and to work through your emotions."

"Because your main focus is to try and stop what's happening."

"As our population and our kin were experiencing mortality, the emotion became: how do you stop this? How do you bury your departed and how do you tend to your wounded?"

"However following the occurrence, which I expect occurring imminently, the main feeling will be sorrow, bereavement, and a deep, deep sense of loss. Because what we've lost is huge."
