Three police officers perished and at least 15 additional individuals were hurt in an apparently intentional detonation from gas at a country home in northern Italy.
The detonation occurred as officers and emergency crews went into the property close to Verona to enforce an eviction order for a brother and sister trio in their late 50s and mid-60s.
Each of the three victims who died were members of the Italian military police.
One male and one female were taken into custody at the location and another man who fled after the incident was apprehended not long after. The trio have been admitted to hospital.
The explosion could be heard as far as 3 miles distant and footage from the area showed the structure left as a heap of debris.
“We are in a period of mourning,” stated the Minister of the Interior Minister Piantedosi, who mentioned that efforts had been made to evict the brother and sister trio in the earlier times.
The president of the Veneto area, the regional head, said the residence was facing an eviction order due to debts accrued by the property owners.
Mediators had been dispatched to talk with the siblings who had barricaded themselves into the house. When the police came just after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities think one of the residents triggered the detonation.
“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” regional commander the police commander told the media.
A propane tank had been ignited, and the blast precisely impacted our officers,” he said.
Petrol bombs were also located at the property, the interior minister stated.
Injured individuals by the explosion included 11 other members of the police force as well as a trio of personnel of the state police and a fire services member.
Based on information from the prosecuting attorney, the building was in a poor condition and had was without power.
The prosecutor thought the explosion had taken place on a story above the doorway and informed journalists it was a “premeditated and voluntary homicide”. Just prior to the blast, he said personnel had “detected a whistling noise, probably the propane tanks being activated”.
“Everyone was aware the circumstances were severe,” nearby inhabitants told reporters, mentioning that the trio had previously threatened to “blow themselves up” rather than leave the house.
“The explosion had left a ‘terrible, very painful and dramatic toll’.”
Defence Minister the Defence Minister united with other government officials in honoring the three men who had lost their lives in the performance of their duties.
