Google's parent company Alphabet Inc. plans to commit fifteen billion dollars for constructing an AI data hub in southern India's Andhra Pradesh state.
The infrastructure, that is planned in the port city of Visakhapatnam, is going to be a segment of Google's global network of AI centres distributed over 12 countries.
"It stands as the greatest artificial intelligence center that we are committing funds to across the globe, apart from the United States of America," the CEO of Google Cloud announced at an conference in Delhi, the national capital recently, mentioning that the funding will be allocated over the next five years.
The revelation arrives during a period President Trump of the United States has been encouraging American companies to focus on investments within the country.
India has risen as a prime location for artificial intelligence facilities. The nation's low data costs and swiftly increasing digital audience have established it as a hub for AI and cloud growth for major tech firms.
"The facility will introduce our industry-leading technology to companies and individuals in the country, accelerating AI innovation and stimulating expansion across the country," commented Sundar Pichai, CEO of Alphabet.
A formal agreement to finalise the venture is scheduled for signing on Tuesday, the Andhra Pradesh government announced.
"It is a major step forward for our state's technological advancement, technological innovation, and worldwide position," stated the technology official Nara Lokesh, the technology minister.
The project will integrate computing and artificial intelligence facilities with renewable energy systems and an enhanced optical fiber network.
This initiative is included in the local administration's plan to establish 6GW of computing facility capacity by the year 2029.
Data centers are physical facilities that house the computing and networking equipment that organizations use to collect, process, store, and distribute data.
These include computer servers, memory systems and networking hardware like firewalls and routers, in addition to the required energy and climate management infrastructure to function properly.
In Andhra Pradesh, the state authorities has been granting subsidised land and energy to attract international investors.
India's data centre industry has expanded quickly in the recent half-decade, crossing the one gigawatt capacity threshold in 2024 and approximately tripling its 2019 capacity.
