Formula 1 driver Liam Lawson disclosed he came dangerously close to a life-threatening incident during Sunday's F1 event in Mexico when two safety personnel crossed the track directly in front of him
The dangerous situation happened on the third rotation when track officials were spotted on the circuit as Lawson was returning to the race following an quick visit to the pits to change his broken nose section
Moments later, Racing Bulls driver Lawson communicated to his pit wall engineer saying: "Is this for real? Did you witness that? I could have... killed them"
"I genuinely couldn't process what I was seeing"
"I exited on a fresh hard compound tires, and then I approached Turn One and suddenly there were two individuals running across the track"
"I came close to striking one of them, honestly, it was extremely hazardous"
"Evidently there's been a miscommunication somehow but I've never experienced that before, and I haven't really seen that in the past. It's completely unacceptable"
"We fail to grasp how on a live track marshals can be authorized to just dash across the track in such a way. I'm clueless about the cause, I'm certain we'll get some form of reasoning, but this must never be repeated"
F1's overseeing organization, the FIA, is currently investigating the situation
"After an occurrence at turn one, the race directors was informed that fragments were located on the track at the critical section of that bend" commented the FIA
"On lap three, marshals were alerted and placed on standby to access the circuit and recover the debris once the entire field had cleared the area"
"Immediately when it was understood that Lawson had made a pit stop, the instructions to dispatch officials were rescinded and a safety warning flag was raised in that area"
"Our inquiry continues what transpired following that moment"
