Texas Attorney General Sues Tylenol Makers Regarding Autism Spectrum Assertions

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is suing the makers of Tylenol, alleging the corporations concealed safety concerns that the drug created to pediatric cognitive development.

The lawsuit comes a month after Donald Trump advocated an unproven link between consuming Tylenol - alternatively called acetaminophen - while pregnant and autism in offspring.

Paxton is taking legal action against J&J, which previously sold the medication, the exclusive pain medication recommended for women during pregnancy, and Kenvue, which now manufacturers it.

In a official comment, he claimed they "betrayed America by making money from suffering and marketing drugs regardless of the risks."

The manufacturer says there is lacking scientific proof tying Tylenol to autism.

"These corporations misled for generations, intentionally threatening countless individuals to increase profits," the attorney general, from the Republican party, declared.

The company said in a statement that it was "deeply concerned by the spread of false claims on the reliability of acetaminophen and the possible consequences that could have on the welfare of US mothers and children."

On its online platform, the company also said it had "consistently assessed the applicable studies and there is no credible data that demonstrates a proven link between using acetaminophen and autism."

Groups speaking for doctors and medical practitioners share this view.

The leading OB-GYN organization has stated paracetamol - the key substance in Tylenol - is among limited choices for women during pregnancy to manage discomfort and fever, which can pose significant medical dangers if ignored.

"In more than two decades of studies on the utilization of acetaminophen in gestation, no reliable research has successfully concluded that the consumption of paracetamol in any trimester of pregnancy causes neurodevelopmental disorders in children," the organization stated.

The lawsuit mentions recent announcements from the former administration in asserting the medication is allegedly unsafe.

In recent weeks, Trump generated worry from health experts when he advised pregnant women to "resist strongly" not to take Tylenol when ill.

The US Food and Drug Administration then released a statement that physicians should consider limiting the usage of Tylenol, while also mentioning that "a proven link" between the drug and autism in children has not been established.

The Health Department head Robert F Kennedy Jr, who supervises the FDA, had pledged in April to conduct "extensive scientific investigation" that would identify the origin of autism in a limited time.

But authorities advised that discovering a single cause of autism spectrum disorder - thought by researchers to be the outcome of a intricate combination of inherited and external influences - would not be simple.

Autism spectrum disorder is a category of permanent neurological difference and impairment that influences how people encounter and interact with the surroundings, and is identified using physician assessments.

In his lawsuit, Paxton - aligned with the former president who is seeking the Senate - asserts the manufacturer and Johnson & Johnson "intentionally overlooked and sought to suppress the research" around acetaminophen and autism.

The lawsuit attempts to require the corporations "remove any promotional materials" that states Tylenol is reliable for women during pregnancy.

The court case echoes the grievances of a group of guardians of children with autism spectrum disorder and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder who took legal action against the producers of Tylenol in 2022.

A federal judge threw out the lawsuit, declaring studies from the family's specialists was inconclusive.
